Bassett will be set a task of stepping up sharply in distance and competing against star Sydney colt Press Statement in the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on Saturday.

It is not the first time that trainer Peter Moody has asked his three-year-old gelding to step up an additional 500m on the back of a first-up run.

Bassett won a 2YO Plate (1100m) at Caulfield in May before being asked to compete in the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) at Doomben in June. Press Statement was far too good on that occasion as Bassett finished 2.4 lengths away in fifth place.

The same blueprint will be followed heading into the Caulfield Guineas with Bassett a first up winner of a 3YO Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on September 19.

Although Press Statement is the dominant $2.25 favourite with Sportsbet, Moody believes Bassett, a $13 chance, can give the favourite a run for his money on Saturday.

“It’s a long way from an ideal preparation going from 1100 to a mile (1600m) in three weeks but he’s in good shape and has worked strongly,” Moody told Racing.com.
“He’s had three or four good gallops since his last run and we did the same thing with him in the winter and he was very competitive with Press Statement. He didn’t have a lot of luck up there and the bonus here is he has only got to go outside of his back door to do it this time.
“It’s a big ask but he’s a very talented young horse and he’s not heavy, he’s quite athletic and that will help his task.”

After looking at the make-up of the field, Moody believed that Chris Waller’s Press Statement is the only standout horse in the field; combine that with the rich prizemoney and it is easy to see why Bassett will be a starter on Saturday.

“Had there been five or six top colts it might have made me forget the Guineas but other than Press Statement there doesn’t look to be a standout and you’ve probably got to give him his chance,” he said.

He has drawn barrier nine and Daniel Stackhouse will take the ride once again.
