Bon Aurum defeats Dal Cielo in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude

The Caulfield Cup carnival gets underway on Saturday with four cracking Group 1 races and the feature will be when the three-year-olds fight it out in the Caulfield Guineas.

Power Price boosts on all Caulfield Guineas runners at Sportsbet between 10-11am on Saturday.

The $1 million race has attracted a capacity field. Here are the top 5 contenders.

Press Statement ($2.40 Crownbet)

The Chris Waller-trained Press Statement is favourite in early markets for the Caulfield Guineas and tuned up for this nicely with a strong win as a $1.30 favourite in the Stan Fox Stakes (1500m). Prior to that he was a desperately unlucky 5th in the Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) behind Exosphere. He has had six starts for 4 wins and while he has drawn wide he looks to have a class edge on his rivals. He claimed the Group 1 J.J.Atkins Stakes (1600m) prior to his spell and is the only horse in the race to have won a Group 1 over the mile. He is the one to beat.

Ready For Victory ($9.00 Bet365)

The Mick Price-trained Ready For Victory heads into this after a series of unlucky runs but shouldn't have any excuses this week after drawing perfectly in Barrier 4. After finishing just behind the placegetters in the Golden Slipper (1200m), the son of More Than Ready resumed with a narrow 2nd at this track in the McNeil Stakes (1200m) despite being badly held up. He followed that up with a 3rd in the Danehill Stakes (1200m) when struggling to get clear galloping room and was then 9th in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m), beaten two lengths by Bon Aurum. The talented performer looks like he is searching for the mile and gets his chance on Saturday.

Dal Cielo ($11 Ladbrokes)

One of only two Group 1 winners in the race, the New Zealand galloper looks to be right in the mix after finishing a narrow 3rd in the Prelude. The Murray Baker-trained colt sped through to lead in that race and kicked on very strongly before just being nabbed late. He took out the Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Group 1 level in his homeland as a two-year-old and whilst he has no exposed 1600m form, he must be respected.

Tarzino ($13 Sportsbet)

The second of the Price gallopers in the Guineas is Tarzino and while the son of Tavistock comes out of a slightly weaker lead up, he looks to be a galloper going places. One of the early favourites in the Victoria Derby (2500m) markets, Tarzino announced himself with a big win at Caulfield over the 1600m on September 19 ahead of Sailing By and Etymology. On that occasion he charged home from the back of the field and while he is up in class he is one to consider.

Tulsa ($15 Crownbet)

Another galloper who is highly rated in early Victoria Derby markets is the Mike Moroney-Trained Tulsa. The son of Sebring has worked home in exciting fashion at his last two, both behind Bon Aurum. He was 6th to that galloper in the Exford Plate (1400m) at Flemington, storming home after being held up in the straight and then worked home very nicely again to finish 2nd in the Prelude. He has drawn poorly in Barrier 16 but this may play into the hands of his racing style. He looms as a solid each-way contender.
